Faith. Focus. Future Readiness.

Helping North County youth build careers they can be proud of.

NCYDC is a Missouri nonprofit rooted in North St. Louis County. We give young people a close look at real careers, the practical skills employers value, and steady adults who stay with them from first interest to first job.

Empowering Youth with Skills, Purpose, and a Pathway to Success.

Who we are

A community-rooted Missouri nonprofit built around young people

NCYDC works with young people across North St. Louis County, with Hazelwood as our home community. Workforce development serves ages 14 to 24; career exploration begins in Grade 5 with age-appropriate learning kept separate from adult training.

Programs are being prepared for 2027, with earlier opportunities offered when available. We are shaping those first cohorts alongside schools, employers, unions, training providers, funders, and neighborhood organizations.

Mission

To develop confident, career-ready youth through innovative programs, mentorship, and real-world opportunities.

Vision

A thriving generation of young leaders who are equipped, inspired, and empowered to shape their futures.

Career pathways

Six directions a young person can explore

Every pathway pairs hands-on skill building with career readiness and mentorship. Credentials offered depend on the cohort, partner, and eligibility, confirmed before enrollment.

  • Skilled Trades

HVAC, electrical, carpentry, painting, and plumbing exposure and preparation.

  • Healthcare

CNA and phlebotomy pathways, plus CPR, First Aid, and BLS through approved partners.

  • Technology

Computer repair and help desk skills, with app development and cybersecurity exposure.

  • Supply Chain and Safety

Forklift operator pathways and OSHA and workplace safety fundamentals.

  • Career Readiness

Resumes, interviewing, career assessments, workplace expectations, and job matching.

  • Mentorship and Life Skills

Communication, conflict resolution, restorative practices, and decision making.

  • Healthcare training scene with a student practicing clinical skills alongside an instructor

How the pathway works

Explore, Prepare, Train, Connect

Young people can join at any point and move at a pace that fits their age and goals.

  1. 01

    Explore

Hands-on activities, worksite exposure, and career assessments introduce what careers actually look like.

  2. 02

    Prepare

Participants build the skills employers expect: reliability, communication, safety awareness, resumes, and interviewing.

  3. 03

    Train

Older youth and young adults move into pre-apprenticeship and credential-focused training with approved partners.

  4. 04

    Connect

We connect participants to work-based learning, employer opportunities, continued education, and follow-up support.

Why North County

Opportunity should not depend on which side of the county line you live on

The talent and willingness are already here. What is often missing is access to training, equipment, transportation, and adults who can open a door.

NCYDC closes that distance early and practically, putting young people in front of real work and building lasting relationships with the employers who do the hiring.

Digital tools that keep participants, families, and partners connected

Secure digital tools help participants track progress, connect with employers, and keep families and partners informed. Technology supports the work; it does not replace the relationships.

Built around the participant journey

From exploration and readiness to training, placement, and outcomes reporting, the technology follows the same steps our participants take.

Founder & Executive Director

Sophia Downs

Sophia trained in painting at Job Corps after attending Normandy Technical High School, then worked in the Normandy School District maintenance department. She saw students unsure what came next and skilled work waiting for people to fill it.

That experience shaped NCYDC's founding belief: young people in North County need to be walked into opportunity, early, by adults who stay in the room. Through training, mentorship, credentials, and honest employer connections, NCYDC turns that belief into real pathways.
